    The study, “Digital Meditation to Target Employee Stress,” published on Jan. 14 in JAMA Network Open, examined the impact of a commercially available digital meditation platform, Headspace, on over 1,400 UCSF employees. Participants who used the app reported improvements in wellbeing, job satisfaction, mindfulness and reductions in stress, depression and anxiety that persisted months after the study ended.

    Combining mindfulness with exercise could be the key to managing stress during a potentially turbulent 2024, a new review argues. Mindfulness meditation -- in which people focus on being in the moment -- can help people better embrace exercise by providing them motivation and helping them look past the temporary discomfort that comes with working out, said lead researcher Masha Remskar, a doctoral student in psychology at the University of Bath in England.

    Capitalism has a way of hijacking our culture’s best ideas. Regardless of the domain, industry turns almost every promising movement into a product. Mindfulness meditation is an interesting example of this phenomenon. The number of Americans who’ve tried meditation has tripled since 2012, which, on the surface at least, seems like a great thing. And in many ways, it is a great thing: Mindfulness meditation encourages people to cultivate a deeper connection with themselves and the world.

    Most of us know what is meant by the term mindfulness. The common understanding is that one’s focus is on the here and now, on what is present moment by moment. A new practice is being added to the curriculum: mindful breathing to improve mental health. CBS New York visited a school in Bedford-Stuyvesant that is already testing it out.
